Large Meissen porcelain petroleum lamp decorated with the classic cobalt-blue Blue Onion pattern. Baluster-shaped body with richly ornamented brass fittings, burner and base, surmounted by a large white opaline glass shade.

Bio:
The Meissen Porcelain Manufactory was founded in Saxony in 1710 and became Europe’s first producer of hard-paste porcelain. Its celebrated cobalt-blue Blue Onion pattern was developed around 1731, inspired by East Asian porcelain decoration. Despite its name, the design depicts motifs including peaches, melons, bamboo and chrysanthemums rather than actual onions. Meissen introduced its famous Crossed Swords trademark in 1722.
