Bio:
Olle Hjortzberg (1872–1959) was a Swedish painter, illustrator, and decorative artist with a long and multifaceted career. As a young artist, he studied book illustration under Agi Lindegren and worked as an assistant to J. A. G. Acke, including on the decoration of Uppsala Cathedral. In 1892, he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. From 1898 onward, Hjortzberg undertook a series of study journeys to Paris, Rome, Greece, Syria, and Palestine. The intense light and vivid, shifting colours of these southern environments had a lasting influence on his painting and became a recurring element in his work. He worked extensively with monumental decorative art and church interiors, including commissions for Engelbrekt Church and Linköpings Läroverk. His style often combines a strong decorative sensibility with organic forms and Art Nouveau influences. Hjortzberg is represented in several of Swedens leading museum collections, and both his landscapes and particularly his flower still lifes remain sought after on the art market.
