Nis Schmidt, "Pietą", mixed media on paper, listed Danish visual artist.
Expressive figurative composition with two closely positioned human figures, executed in mixed media on paper. One figure appears weakened and reclines against the other, rendered with raw, fragmented contours in restrained earth and grey tones with occasional reddish accents. The close interaction between the figures emphasises the themes of grief, compassion and human vulnerability. The work forms part of a series centred on the death of Christ as its recurring religious theme. Signed in pencil, dated 25 August 2018 and inscribed Viuf.

Bio:
Nis Schmidt 19322025 was a Danish painter and self-taught visual artist whose artistic practice was closely associated with ecclesiastical art and Christian iconography. He completed numerous church commissions, including altar crosses, stained-glass works and reliefs. His visual language is characterised by strongly drawn and often fragmented motifs in which line and colour function as central elements. Throughout his long career, Schmidt combined his extensive knowledge of Christianity with a highly personal and expressive artistic language.
