Bio:
Agapito Labios (1898–1996), born Agapito Engel Cifuentes in Pachuca, Hidalgo, was a self-taught Mexican painter best known for his charming naïve and folk-inspired works. After participating in the Mexican Revolution, he was imprisoned, where his paintings attracted the attention of local officials and led to his first portrait commissions. Throughout his long career he specialised in portraits of children, family subjects, and festive scenes, characterised by vibrant colours, decorative floral motifs, and a direct, narrative style. Today his paintings are regarded as important examples of 20th-century Mexican folk and naïve art and are sought after by collectors worldwide.
