Hyonsun Rhee for Upsala Ekeby
Vase, model 5044, 1960s.
An elegant and highly characteristic stoneware vase designed by the Korean-Japanese ceramic artist Hyonsun Rhee for Upsala-Ekeby during the mid-1960s. The vase features a harmonious bottle-shaped form with a cylindrical body and a slender, gently flared neck. It is finished in a subdued olive-green glaze with subtle tonal variations and a lively depth of colour, enhanced by its delicately crystalline surface.
The lower section is decorated with an organic relief pattern composed of small, irregular indentations, where the glaze gathers in blue-green hues to create a subtle lava-like effect. The decoration reflects Rhee’s distinctive fusion of Scandinavian design principles and East Asian aesthetics, in which nature-inspired textures and tactile surfaces play a central role. The base is impressed with the Upsala-Ekeby factory mark, model number 5044, and the artist’s signature.
