Bio:
Mari Simmulson (1911–2000) was born to Estonian parents in St Petersburg, Russia. At the time of the Russian Revolution in 1917, the family moved back to Estonia, where she later studied at the State Art School in Tallinn during the 1930s. After the Second World War she settled in Sweden and became a leading designer at Upsala Ekeby, creating a wide range of decorative ceramic works characterised by figurative motifs, stylised faces, and richly ornamented surfaces. Her visual language combines narrative elements with modernist simplification and is today regarded as one of the most distinctive expressions of mid-20th-century Swedish art ceramics.
